Search operations are underway for a 34-year old missing man

Two little boys aged three and five who were on board a six-man canoe which capsized in Gairloch in the north-west of Scotland have died in hospital, police confirmed today, while a 34-year old man remains missing.

Six people, two men and four children, were on board the canoe when it capsized. The young boys were rescued by a helicopter from Gairloch yesterday afternoon when the mishap occurred. They were rushed to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness in critical condition, before succumbing to their deaths last night.
A five-year-old girl who was also airlifted to Broadford Hospital in Skye after being rescued from the loch remained seriously ill late last night.

A 35-year-old man and a ten-year-old girl managed to swim to shore unscathed and alerted Stornoway Coastguard at around 4:15pm. A helicopter and lifeboats from Portree, Gairloch and Loch Ewe launched a search and found the three children.

Local fishing boats and whale-spotting craft helped rescue services in the search for the 34-year old missing man in the water near the Big Sands caravan park in Gairloch yesterday which was suspended for the night due to lack of light. The search will resume again this morning.

Police said the group were in a Canadian canoe, a narrow boat designed to carry numerous passengers. Inquiries into the incident are ongoing. It is thought that some of the group are members of the same family. The cause of the capsize is still unknown as conditions in the area were said to be calm as stated by a few locals.
