Heavy rains on the second day cause transport disruptions in the UK

Main rail lines between Scotland and England are blocked by landslides after Northern England, the Midlands, Scotland and Northern Ireland were hit by heavy storms on Thursday.

The Environment Agency has 10 flood warnings and 47 alerts in place, mainly in the Midlands and northern England. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has one flood warning, for Glen Lyon, in Perth and Kinross, and 12 flood alerts covering many areas.

A 24-wagon train came off the tracks near Tulloch, blocking the West Highland line between Crianlarich and Mallaig. East Coast Trains said it had cancelled all services between Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed.

In north-east England around 23,000 properties lost power due to flash flooding and lightning storms. About 7,000 were still without power at 05:30 BST, according to Northern Powergrid. Flooding in the region forced the closure of roads, the Metro network and the Tyne Tunnel.

Over 40 schools remain closed in Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and County Durham. On Thursday, North Tyneside Council said it had received more than 200 reports of flood-related incidents and flooding had prompted the closure of at least eight schools.

Network Rail said the West Coast line was shut at Tebay in Cumbria, while the East Coast main line is obstructed at Berwick. There are no trains running between Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed and there is no replacement bus service. First TransPennine Express is warning journeys to and from Newcastle may be delayed by up to 60 minutes.

A Virgin Trains service from London to Glasgow was stranded in the Lake District for more than two hours between two landslides before being diverted. It encountered further problems when its front carriages had to be evacuated amid reports of a fire.
